Courses In Buddhism
“It is the nature of all things that take form to return to what they once were. Be a lamp unto yourself. Don’t look for the answer outside yourself. Hold on to the truth like a torch. Work out your own enlightenment with diligence”
- from the Buddha’s last words.
The broad appeal and lack of constraints has lead to Buddhism gaining popularity around the globe. It is not a religion as such, and encourages individuals to search within themselves for their own goals and enlightenment.
"When the mind begins to become still, we then begin to truly see it. When you first try to stabilize and pacify the mind, initially it will become very busy because it’s not accustomed to being still. In fact, it doesn’t even necessarily want to become still, but it is essential to get a hold of the mind to recognize its nature. This practice is extremely important. ... Eventually you will find yourself in a state where your mind is clear and open all the time. It is just like when the clouds are removed from the sky and the sun can clearly be seen, shining all the time. This is coming close to the state of liberation, liberation from all traces of suffering. ... The truth of this practice is universal. It isn’t necessary to call it a religion to practice it. Whether one is a Hindu or a Muslim or a Christian or a Buddhist simply doesn’t matter. Anyone can practice this because this is the nature of everyone’s mind. If you can get a handle on your mind, and pacify it in this way, you will definitely experience these results, and you will see them in your daily life situation. There is no need to put this into any kind of category, any kind of "ism."
- Venerable Gyatrul Rinpoche
During your course you will be staying in a truly enchanting monastery, up on a hill away from Kathmandu’s noise and distractions. The beauty and serenity really is something to behold.
The monastery is a special place. The atmosphere, the fact that there are others doing the same as you, the sangha living there - so inspiring. Whether you choose to follow the Buddhist way of life, or not, the course really helps you sort out what is worthwhile in life. The experience there can be life changing in a positive sense. The course gives you the time and space and guidance to learn skills to deal with the issues we confront in life. It can help you to discover how to make your life meaningful, how to lessen your difficulties, the disturbing attitudes such anger and greed and ignorance etc and how to become happier, how to develop the positive qualities such as love and compassion and wisdom; how to be a source of benefit for others and not harm them; what the purpose of your life is.
“I am so glad I took this course (10 day short introductory course). I was looking for time out to re-evaluate things, and I don’t believe I could have chosen a better way to do it. I’ve had a mild interest in Buddhism, but I would never say I was an expert at all. I still don’t! But I’ve learned so much that I’ll take on and never forget and will hopefully guide me through when life throws things at me. The monastery is absolutely beautiful. I couldn’t believe it when I arrived. I was so happy”
